Current Activities
March 2 is the first Sunday and our focus is Gardening. The 1-5 graders will plant our first tomato garden, starting with 72 seeds, in a starter kit (that Cindy will monitor). Four kinds of tomatos including delicious cherry. When the seeds reach 4" the children will transplant them to small bio-degradeable containers. When the small plants need to be transferred to our garden some volunteers will help. As part of our complete involvement with the young farmers the remaining tomato plants will be distributed among the congregation.
Greening Activities in the past
On the first Sunday in October, children in grades 1-6 were engaged in demonstrations to show how different materials are recycled at a MRF.
In December the topic was consumerism and the children did activities with all the Christmas advertisements from the Sunday newspaper and saw a film entitled, All the Right Stuff. The young person starring in the film comments, "I could live without the mall...but not for very long". The Church of the River children explored how they felt about this statement as well as which voices were the loudest, theirs or the advertisers.
January's focus was on the three "Rs": Recycle, Reduce, Reuse. River Explorers created a 3D mural from found items reusing them to create a work of art hanging in the Potter wing across from the Chalice Room.
February's theme was Composting. Carl Awsumb presented to the 1-5 graders; showing pictures of his three composting systems in four different locations; including a close up of vermiculture(raising worms). It was agreed that there would be a composting bin in the Oasis.
